Whether you’re making a weekend of it or just looking for somewhere to grab a meal between wedding events, California Gold Country has plenty to offer. From charming Gold Rush towns and local wineries to scenic hikes and historic railroads, we hope you’ll take some time to explore while you’re visiting!

Sonora

The largest town in the area, Sonora is full of historic charm, good restaurants, and unique local shops.

Things to Do

  • Stroll historic downtown Washington Street and browse the boutiques, bookstores, and antique shops.
  • Visit the Tuolumne County Museum to learn about the area’s Gold Rush history.
  • Take a hike or a walk along Dragoon Gulch.

Places to Eat & Drink

  • Bigwood Brew Works — great burgers and vegetarian options served with local brews.
  • The Armory — beer garden and rooftop, plus a bourbon-themed cocktail area. (Likely where we’ll end up on Friday.)
  • Yianni’s Grill — Greek spot with a friendly owner who often checks in with guests.
  • Inner Sanctum Cellars — cute winery and taproom with occasional live music, a 15-minute drive from downtown.
  • Mandy’s Breakfast House — excellent low-key local diner for breakfast and brunch.
  • Escondite de la Torre — solid spot for a Mexican food fix in Sonora.

Jamestown

Just a few minutes from Sonora, Jamestown is a classic Gold Rush town with Old West character and a well-preserved historic Main Street.

Things to Do

  • Wander Main Street and explore the antique stores and local boutiques.
  • Visit Railtown 1897 State Historic Park.

Places to Eat & Drink

  • Woods Creek Cafe (breakfast and lunch) — unparalleled biscuits and gravy in a venue with floor-to-ceiling cow-themed tchotchkes.
  • Bear Tent Brewing Co. — local brews in a historic building. They also have books about the area, plus toys and games.

Murphys

A favorite weekend destination known for its wine tasting, shopping, and one of the most charming Main Streets in the Sierra foothills.

Things to Do

  • Spend an afternoon wine tasting — more than 20 tasting rooms are within walking distance. (A few we like: Lavender Ridge, Val du Vino, and Newsome Harlow.)
  • Browse the local boutiques (especially the book shop!), art galleries, and specialty shops.
  • Enjoy live music at Murphys Irish Pub, or check the Calaveras events calendar for what else is on.

Places to Eat & Drink

  • Murphys Irish Pub — the corned beef tacos are a surprising treat.
  • Grounds Restaurant — solid New American spot.
  • Murphys Grade — the best (and only) lobster roll in town. The signs advertise oysters and CBD (make it make sense, Murphys?), but the whole menu is solid.

Columbia State Historic Park

Step back in time in this preserved Gold Rush town, where many buildings date back to the 1850s. Great for kids and for anyone with a hankering for sarsaparilla.

Things to Do

  • Explore the historic streets and original Gold Rush buildings.
  • Try your luck panning for gold.
  • Ride a horse-drawn stagecoach.
  • Watch blacksmith demonstrations and browse the old-fashioned shops.
  • Visit the museum and the historic schoolhouse.

Worth the Drive

If you’re staying an extra day (or two!), these destinations are some of our favorite places in the Sierra Nevada.

Yosemite National Park (about 1–1.5 hours)

One of the most beautiful national parks in the world, Yosemite is famous for its towering granite cliffs, giant waterfalls, and breathtaking scenery.

  • Easy walks and full-day hikes for every skill level

Calaveras Big Trees State Park (about 45 minutes)

Walk among some of California’s magnificent giant sequoias. Several beautiful trails wind through the ancient groves, making this a perfect outing for families and nature lovers.

Lake Time

  • Pinecrest Lake — a beautiful mountain lake perfect for swimming, kayaking, hiking, or lounging by the water. About 40 minutes from Sonora.
  • New Melones — a reservoir 30 minutes from Sonora, perfect for relaxing on a warm day.
  • Lake Alpine — a peaceful, tucked-away mountain lake with gorgeous scenery and plenty of opportunities to hike, picnic, and relax. About an hour from Sonora.
